Apple's iPhone 4 for the Verizon Wireless network is similar to the AT&T version but comes with improvements including a "redesign" of the antenna, according to a "teardown analysis" this week by IHS iSuppli. "Apple's new designs always exhibit changes, evolution and optimization," Andrew Rassweiler, the El Segundo tech researcher's senior director of teardown services, said in an e-mail. The phone includes parts worth $171.35 -- among them a Qualcomm chip compatible with Verizon's CDMA network that also "integrates GPS control circuitry" -- with the tot

The Cupertino maker of Mac computers and "i" devices, you might recall, was hit with reports of a "death grip" signal problem when the AT&T iPhone 4 was released last year. According to iSuppli, Apple has included a separate Bluetooth and Wi-Fi antenna in the Verizon model. "The use of antenna diversity is significant because this scheme improves signal reception performance," Wayne Lam, an iSuppli senior analyst, noted in the e-mail. Bing's higher 'success rates': Mountain View Internet juggernaut Google kept its lead in the online search market in January, powering nearly 68 percent of U.S. queries, Experian Hitwise reported this week. That share, however, was down nearly 2 percentage points from the month before. Microsoft's Bing, which provides searches for its own site and Sunnyvale Internet content powerhouse Yahoo, jumped nearly 2 percentage points to more than 27 percent. Notably, as Google faces criticism that some searches on its site are bringing up spammy results, "Bing and Yahoo Search achieved the highest success rates in January 2011," Experian Hitwise noted in an e-mail. "This means that for both search engines, more than 81 percent of searches executed resulted in a visit to a website. Google achieved a success rate of 65 percent." Quora's momentum: How's Quora doing? Traffic to the Palo Alto question-and-answer upstart tripled in January from the month before as the site got "considerable coverage" from such blogs as TechCrunch, Experian Hitwise research director Heather Dougherty noted in a blog post this week. "The large share of the audience tends to be characterized by college-educated professionals, along with students poised to join those same segments following graduation," Dougherty wrote. iTunes at the movies: Apple's iTunes led in the online movie sale and rental market in 2010, but lost some market share from the year before, El Segundo industry researcher IHS Screen Digest reported this week. In 2009, Apple captured 74.4 percent of the market share among U.S. consumers buying or renting movies online, according to IHS. That dropped to 64.5 percent last year. However, that's a smaller part of a rapidly growing market, IHS noted, with total industry revenue growing 60 percent year over year. "Apple faced serious competition from Microsoft's Zune Video and Sony's PlayStation Store, as well as from Amazon and -- most significantly -- Wal-Mart," Arash Amel, IHS's research director for digital media, said in an e-mail. "However, iTunes managed to grow because of the introductions of the iPad and the second-generation Apple TV, which have spurred the company's movie rental offerings." D'oh!: It's not just you. Nearly 2 in 5 computer users have cursed or yelled at their PCs, according to a survey of 14,284 consumers released this week by Avira, a German computer security software maker.
